Plant-based milk is usually a pricier alternative to cow’s milk, but you can save money by making it at home. In this episode of ITK: Kitchen Hacks, we show you how you can make DIY almond milk in a few simple steps. Plus, you can even add some flavor to it to make it truly your own. Here’s how it’s done:

How to make unflavored DIY almond milk

Step 1:

First, soak almonds in water overnight. You can also use another type of nuts or seeds to make plant-based milk instead of almonds.

Step 2:

Add one cup of soaked and drained almonds to a blender with four to five cups of water, then blend on high for one to two minutes.

Step 3:

Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth, and the liquid that you get is your DIY almond milk!

Refrigerate and use it within four to five days to prevent your DIY almond milk from going bad. You can use it in smoothies, cereal, baked goods, oatmeal – or just drink it as is.

How to make flavored almond milk

Use fruit to make flavored almond milk. You can use any type you like, including strawberries, blueberries, bananas or apples.

Step 1:

Complete all of the steps to making unflavored DIY almond milk.

Step 2:

Combine one and a half cups of fruit of your choice with one cup of sugar and half a cup of water. Simmer the mixture over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 3:

Strain the cooked fruit mixture and discard the solids. Let the remaining liquid cool, then add it to your plant milk, and whisk until combined.

How to make chocolate almond milk

Step 1:

Complete all of the steps to making unflavored DIY almond milk.

Step 2:

Melt chocolate in a separate bowl, then add it to your plant milk to taste. Whisk until combined.
