22-year-old creator admits that she feels ‘so jealous’ when she sees girl best friends: ‘literally about to have a mental breakdown’

One woman on TikTok has emotionally admitted to getting “so jealous” when she sees girl best friends.

On June 9, NYC-based creator Via Li (@via..li) took to the digital platform to candidly share her thoughts about girl best friends after seeing two while at a cafe.

“I just got to this cafe and I saw these two girls just sitting next to each other. You know, they had their laptops out and they were just smiling with each other,” she says, before tearfully adding, “Why am I crying?”

Their comfort and ease around each other was very apparent, according to Li.

“I just get the feeling they probably live together,” she says. “I think it’s just so great to have this best friend that you can do everything with. They’re not here anymore. I think they left. It just seems so happy, you know. And I’m here, literally about to have a mental breakdown.”

For Li, seeing girl best friends elicits “a different type of pain.”

“When I see couples, I don’t even get jealous,” she explains. “But when I see two girl best friends…I literally look at them and I just feel like I’m gonna start crying.”

Li’s emotional response and “friendship envy” may, in part, be exacerbated by the supposed prevalence of “girl squads” and having girl best friends in mainstream media and celebrity culture. Some creators on Bridal TikTok, for example, have gotten candid about the fear of not having enough girlfriends to fill out a bridal party.
