Apple Intelligence to Integrate Google Gemini, Enhancing AI Options
Apple's plans to incorporate Google Gemini into its Apple Intelligence platform are progressing, as revealed by backend iOS code.
Aaron Perris, an analyst for 9To5Mac, discovered mentions of "Google" alongside "OpenAI" and "Third Party Model" in the iOS 18.4 beta update. This suggests that Google's AI model, Gemini, may soon become available to Apple users as an alternative to ChatGPT.
Apple Confirms Google Partnership
This discovery aligns with Apple's previous announcements. Following the launch of Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, software executive Craig Federighi confirmed rumors of an Apple and Google partnership, stating, "We're looking forward to doing integrations with other models, including Google Gemini, for instance, in the future."
Integration Details Remain Unknown
While the discovery of backend code indicates active development, it does not confirm that Gemini will be included in the iOS 18.4 update. However, it suggests that Apple is actively working on the integration.
Mixed Reception to Apple Intelligence
The launch of Apple Intelligence has faced mixed reviews. Users have expressed frustration with the staggered and delayed rollout, underwhelmed by gimmicky features, and annoyed by inaccurate AI-generated summaries.
Apple's Commitment to AI Development
Despite mixed feedback, Apple remains committed to AI development. The company reportedly plans to introduce its own LLM (Large Language Model) in iOS 19 and macOS 16, which may be announced at WWDC this year.
Competition from Samsung
Samsung has been more aggressive in deploying AI features, with Google Gemini integration already available on its Galaxy series. The integration of Gemini into Apple Intelligence could potentially help Apple catch up to competitors and address its shortcomings in voice assistant performance.
