Warren Buffett's Message on Fiscal Stability and Equity Investing

In his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Warren Buffett issued a cautionary message to the U.S. government regarding currency stability and social responsibility.

Fiscal Responsibility

Buffett emphasized the potential consequences of fiscal recklessness, warning that "if fiscal folly prevails, paper money can see its value evaporate."

He cited historical examples and expressed concern about unsustainable spending in some countries and the potential impact on the U.S. if similar practices are not curbed.

Warren Buffett's Legacy and Transition

Buffett, now 94, acknowledged his advanced age and announced that he will reduce his participation in the upcoming Berkshire annual meeting due to mobility limitations.

However, he expressed confidence in Vice Chairman Greg Abel, who will assume leadership of the conglomerate and has "shown his ability" to manage capital effectively.

Berkshire Hathaway's Financial Performance

The company's annual report revealed a record third consecutive annual operating profit increase of 27% to $47.44 billion.

Berkshire's cash and equivalents surged to $334.2 billion, reflecting stock sales and high market valuations.

Buffett's Investment Strategy

Despite concerns about fiscal stability, Buffett reiterated Berkshire's preference for owning equities, particularly U.S. stocks, over cash. He stressed that the company "is not finished" and will continue to seek investment opportunities.

Buffett highlighted the company's plans to increase its holdings in Japanese trading houses: Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, and Sumitomo. Berkshire had invested $23.5 billion in these companies at year-end.

Market Outlook

Buffett lamented the scarcity of buying opportunities due to high stock valuations. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices continue to reach record levels.

Despite the rising market, Berkshire's stock price has outperformed the S&P 500 over the past decade.

Berkshire's Annual Meeting

Buffett will provide further insights into Berkshire and its outlook at the annual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 3.

This year's meeting will be shorter and will not include the traditional film presentation.

Buffett's Personal Reflections

Buffett shared his thoughts on aging, discussing his regular Sunday conversations with his 91-year-old sister Bertie and the practical benefits of using a cane.
