Harbinger: Revolutionizing Medium-Duty Electric Vehicles Without Reinventing the Wheel

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — Harbinger, a startup, aims to reshape the delivery industry, but in an understated way. Their approach is to focus on the essentials, leaving the familiar unchanged.

Modest Goals, Practical Results

Unlike many companies attempting to radically transform delivery with drones or futuristic vehicles, Harbinger focuses on medium-duty trucks, which are significantly larger than Rivian or Mercedes eSprinters. Harbinger's pre-production vehicles appear identical to the standard flat-sided, vinyl-wrapped delivery trucks that have remained virtually unchanged for decades. That's because they essentially are those vehicles. Harbinger's chassis are built on common platforms like the Ford F-59 or Freightliner MT45, retaining the ladder chassis and leaf spring designs from the early days of trucking.

Focus on Electrification

Instead of discarding decades of optimization, Harbinger retains the traditional chassis but replaces combustion engines with cleaner, cheaper electric drive systems. They exclusively focus on medium-duty options, ranging from 5 to 15 tons.

Partnership with Upfitters

Harbinger focuses on the differentiated aspects, the electric powertrain, and allows companies to source the bodywork from their preferred upfitters. These upfitters have decades of experience customizing delivery vehicles to meet specific needs, such as door handles, locking systems, and slight variations in dimensions.

Familiar Driving Experience

Harbinger's solution operates in a different way while maintaining familiarity. It retains the traditional ladder-frame and leaf-spring rear suspension, but replaces the diesel engine with a 330-kW electric motor mounted between the rear wheels. The De Dion arrangement isolates the heavy motor from the rear suspension. This design ensures that drivers familiar with traditional diesel trucks can easily transition to Harbinger's electric vehicles. The driving experience is largely unchanged, with the exception of smoother acceleration and sharper braking.

Affordability and Incentives

Harbinger aims for price parity with diesel-powered machines. CEO John Harris declined to provide formal pricing, but affordability depends in part on federal incentives. Currently, alternatively fueled medium-duty vehicles are eligible for credits of up to $40,000. Even without incentives, Harbinger has some price flexibility due to lower operating costs. Harbinger targets a cost of $0.40 per mile, significantly lower than the $0.85 typical of diesel vehicles.

Focus on Acquisition Cost and Operating Savings

Harbinger believes that offering a product with an acquisition cost comparable to diesel vehicles is crucial for adoption. While total cost of ownership (TCO) savings are important, Harbinger prioritizes the initial purchase price and ongoing operating cost savings for drivers and companies.
