Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, architecture studio Balbek Bureau's RE:Ukraine Initiative Preserves Ukraine's Rural Architecture
By preserving Ukraine's rural architecture, RE:Ukraine Villages not only safeguards a tangible piece of the country's heritage but also provides opportunities for education and cultural engagement. This initiative is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Ukrainian people.
Preserving Ukraine's Cultural Heritage
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Balbek Bureau has been spearheading a series of social initiatives under RE:Ukraine to support the country. Among these initiatives is RE:Ukraine Villages, a project dedicated to safeguarding Ukraine's rural architecture.
Digitalizing Traditional Houses (Khatas)
Volunteers have embarked on a journey across Ukraine to gather data on the region's traditional houses, known as khatas. Using Google Maps and other online tools, they meticulously document this unique cultural heritage. The project aims to prevent the permanent loss of these structures, often destroyed by shelling.
Collaboration with Kyiv National University
To enhance academic understanding of Ukrainian village architecture, RE:Ukraine Villages has partnered with Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA). Students are given the opportunity to design 3D models of khatas and settlements, contributing to the preservation of this cultural treasure.
Filling the Knowledge Gap
Historically, there has been limited written documentation on Ukrainian village houses. RE:Ukraine Villages seeks to fill this gap by compiling a comprehensive database. This information will serve as a vital resource for future generations and researchers interested in the subject.
Old Khata Project Partnership
The initiative collaborates with "old khata project," a documentary endeavor that captures the beauty and diversity of Ukrainian rural architecture. The project's photographs and insights provide valuable context and inspiration for RE:Ukraine Villages.
