Chalmers to Meet with U.S. Counterpart on Trade, Tariffs

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced plans to depart for the United States this week to engage in discussions with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The agenda for their meeting includes trade and tariffs, specifically the possibility of Australia's exemption from steel and aluminum tariffs.

Australia-U.S. Trade Ties

This visit follows President Trump's recent expression of willingness to consider exempting Australia from the tariffs, in light of the country's trade surplus with the U.S. Chalmers acknowledged that while he does not expect to finalize these discussions during his time in Washington, he is eager to establish a rapport with his counterpart.

Strategic Ally in the Indo-Pacific

Australia, a key U.S. security ally in the Indo-Pacific region, plays a relatively minor role in global steel exports but is the world's leading exporter of iron ore, which is essential for steel production. Trump had previously granted Australia an exemption from tariffs on steel and aluminum during his first term.
