Azul Eyes Renewed Focus on Operations After Challenging 2024
Focus on Core Operations
Brazilian airline Azul (AZUL.N) looks forward to a year of renewed operational focus after a turbulent 2024 characterized by supply chain disruptions, flooding, debt restructuring, and a weaker Brazilian real. CEO John Rodgerson expressed optimism about 2025, predicting it to be more promising: "I am excited about 2025. It can't be worse than 2024."
Operational Challenges and Debt Restructuring
In 2024, Azul faced a multitude of challenges, including supply chain issues leading to delayed aircraft deliveries, flooding in Porto Alegre impacting operations, and balance sheet pressures ultimately resulting in debt deals with lessors.
The company recently completed a substantial debt restructuring, resulting in the reduction of approximately $1.6 billion in debt and the acquisition of $525 million in additional funding. As Rodgerson stated, "We are well positioned as we have concluded all our renegotiation, so now we can focus a lot more on operations. I would say go back to basics and deliver the Azul product the market knows."
Positive Earnings Outlook and Performance
Azul projects earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of approximately 7.4 billion reais ($1.29 billion) for 2025, representing an estimated 22% growth compared to 2024.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, core earnings surged by 33% year-over-year to 1.95 billion reais, driven by increased passenger traffic and load factor. Rodgerson highlighted that unit revenue remained stable despite expanded capacity.
Business Combination with Gol
Azul is exploring a potential merger with fellow Brazilian airline Gol Linhas Aéreas (GOLL4.SA). If successful, this combination would create a dominant carrier in Latin America's largest economy, controlling approximately 60% of the domestic market.
